Located at the base of Mauna Kahalawai, also known as the "West Maui Mountains" is the historic town of Lahaina. Once the original capital of the Hawaiian Islands, Lahaina is located just along the west Maui shoreline with beautiful views of Lanai'i and Moloka'i if you stroll along Front Street. The town features such landmarks as the Old Lahaina Lighthouse ( Commissioned in 1840 by Kamehameha III), The Pioneer Inn which served as the only hotel on the west side of Maui until the 1950's and the landmark Banyon Tree planted back in 1873 (see the LahainaTown.com website for an historic walking tour map). Dickenson Square is located in the heart of town (diagonally across from the Maria Lanakila Church) about a block from Front Street. The first hour of parking is free and there are a variety of gift shops and restaurants to enjoy.
